If you want to learn Finnish in comfort of your own home and you want that teaching meets your needs, then small group studies and private lessons are your way to go.
I’m Henna Haapala. I’m a native Finnish speaker and a professional Finnish teacher. I earned my Master’s Degree at Oulu University in 2010. Since I have been teaching Finnish as a second language in different schools.
I offer lessons online in small study groups. I also do one-on-one lessons.
Study groups
In a study group you get the benefit of learning in a relaxed environment as the group is small. The maximum number of the students in a group is five. In a group of this size you and your needs are met. You also get the benefit of learning in conversations with other students.
At the lessons you will practice your speaking skills but also grammar and vocabulary from everyday life.
Price: 120 € / 6 meetings
Private lessons
In private lessons you can study exactly what you need and you can use any material that is suitable for you. You can bring your work-related text to the lessons.
You can translate pages of your favorite book and we can explore new words, phrases and grammar. Also, you can improve your pronunciation or listening skills with me.
There are a lot of different ways to learn. Study book is also an option.
In lessons I teach via Zoom and I usually use Google Docs to share and edit documents.
Private lessons are a great support for your studies in a class. They also can stand on their own helping you to become more fluent in Finnish.

Feedback from my students
I have struggled with Finnish for many years, I initially studied for a year, and started working, so it was hard to keep up with learning such a difficult language. I even gave up and studied Swedish instead and passed the YKI test for citizenship. However, after living here for a few years, and deciding that I will stay in Finland for a longer time, I feel the urge to pick up Finnish again to be more fully integrated into Finland.
The Finnish course with Henna was perfect for me since it was online, and the timing from 6-8pm works well after my job ends, most of the other courses available start too early in the afternoon. Henna is kind and patient, and she provides the right environment to give me the confidence to learn Finnish again.
She also explains the grammar rules clearly, and the pace of the classes is quite well balanced. Although there are many students in the course, she gives the opportunity for everyone to participate. In my daily life, after a few months with Henna, I am motivated to listen to friends’ conversations, read the news and watch shows in Finnish more and more as I can finally grasp more of the language.

It’s full of communication. It’s not just the teacher talking while we listen. There’s always a conversation between her and us. It really feels like teamwork. We talk, think, ask extra questions — and always get full answers. She is an excellent teacher: very clear, focused, and always helping us move forward.
The study materials are strong and well prepared. The tests are especially good — they are deep and interesting. They really help us check what we know and make it stronger. When I do a test, I remember the whole course and feel how much I’ve learned.
And most importantly — I see real results. I feel much more confident when speaking with people, and I can now write emails in Finnish without fear.
